Aim of this youth exchange is to prevent and fight misperceptions of cultural and social groups that can lead to negative attitudes and discrimination. Project implements artistic activities: participants will learn about cultural diversity and anti-discrimination using visual tools and creative, interactive methods. In eight days young people will prepare photo exhibition under the title “Portraits of Positive Emotions”. Its idea is to celebrate diversity, to see the difference positively and to favour positive attitudes, values and behaviour towards it. To ensure the quality of the exposition we will organize several workshops and sessions where participants will develop their creative and technical skills in portrait photography, also in some short photo-trips around Struga, town in Macedonia, where the exchange will take place. Learning and sharing experiences and knowledge will help 30 young people from Macedonia, Croatia, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Latvia and Estonia to develop their artistic and social skills and to learn to express ideas about tolerance, diversity and anti-discrimination without using verbal tools - a good picture can be worth a thousand words!

In our understanding basis of cultural conflicts, negative attitudes and discriminatory practices is not the difference itself, but misconceptions and misperceptions of this difference. Mass media are one of the institutions that are often responsible about creation of such misperceptions about some particular social, ethnical or cultural group. Another important aspect is lack of knowledge about different cultural and social groups. It makes young people more easily influenced by negative information about some social groups within their countries or about people coming from other states.

This project will promote tolerance and celebrate diversity, foster mutual understanding between young people in different countries and also make young participants to think about their role in reducing negative attitudes and fighting against discrimination.  Objectives of the project are formulated as follows:

-To support dialogue and intercultural encounters among young people from different backgrounds in order to give them new knowledge about other cultures that would serve as a basis for more tolerant and positive attitudes towards difference;
-To reduce misperceptions of different ethnical, religious, cultural and social groups that could lead to negative attitudes, prejudices and discrimination;
-To discuss basis of discrimination in different countries and what young people can do to reduce discriminating practices;
-To learn to use tools of the visual communication for promoting equity and celebrating diversity;
-To develop general creative skills of the participants and photographing skills in particular.

We will be working from the basis of difference: seeing different viewpoints, ideas and values as the starting points from which to work towards common ground. Equality and human dignity will be emphasized in the working process. Participants will discuss prejudices and stereotypes within our society toward other societies and cultures. Why those prejudices and stereotypes appear? Why and on what basis there starts discrimination? These and other questions will be discussed in the group to find the common understanding about the influence of misperceptions on our way of interacting with other people and what can be done to reduce cultural  misunderstandings.
